Conflict-Resolution with Kelso's Choices

We have been learning about Kelso's Choices ,and how we can solve our own small problems, in our guidance lessons this week and next! Here is a recap of what we have been learning.

Remember, when it is a small problem (argument with a friend, not wanting to play the same game, not wanting to share, etc.) try at least two of Kelso's Choices. You can try more than two if you like, but you need to at least try two before going to an adult for help. Why do we try two? Sometimes you try one and it doesn't work right away, so you may need to try one more choice to try and solve your problem.

If it is a BIG problem (bullying vs. someone was just being mean, you are being physically hurt, feel in danger or threatened, or someone else is being hurt or in danger) then please tell an adult right away. You do not need to try Kelso's Choices first in these cases.

Have fun singing along with Kelso, if you need a reminder about the choices and want to get a catchy song stuck in your head! ;-)

New SEL Trait of the Month: Self-Discipline

Hi Eagles! We really enjoyed seeing everyone dress up for the Red Ribbon Week spirit days this week!! It was fun to have some cheer. We have wrapped up all our lessons on bullying and will be moving into conflict-resolution and how you can solve small problems using Kelso's Choices during the month of November. We also have a new SEL Trait of the Month for November...Self-Discipline, also known as Self-Control! Watch Ms. Ahumada try to practice some self-discipline.

We practice self-discipline every day by making choices big and small. What are some ways you have practiced good self-discipline? What has been a struggle for you? Here are some other fun videos you can check out to help serve as a reminder of what it means to have self-discipline.

We look forward to checking in with your teachers this month to see how you are practicing self-discipline!

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week has arrived!! I hope you are dressed for one of our fun, spirit day themes as you read this! While we get to dress up in fun themes all week, let's not forget the importance of why we have Red Ribbon Week and why it is so important. Watch this video clip for a little bit of its history.

It's important that we start learning about this at a young age, so we know what to do if we are ever faced with being pressured by our peers. If we practice saying "NO!" to drugs and alcohol now, the easier it will be for us to do it in the future.

Sometimes drugs can even look like candy, and we have to be very careful about what we accept from others. Never take something from a stranger, especially if it is something they are wanting you to eat. Try playing this game to see if you can tell which one is a pill/something you shouldn't eat, or candy. It can be pretty tricky as you get to the higher levels in the game.

How did you do? Did you get them all right? Some of them are tricky, aren't they?! Since we are talking about candy now, Halloween is coming up this week! Make sure you are careful and check all of your candy for any open pieces, if you go trick-or-treating. Toss out any that are open, unwrapped, or look odd. Here's a fun Halloween-themed video for you to answer some questions and dance! The video will ask you a question and give you a little time to respond. Then, it'll play some music and you can get up and dance! Have fun!

We hope you have a safe and super fun Halloween!! We look forward to seeing you all dressed up each day for Red Ribbon Week! Remember to "Just Say NO to Drugs!!" :-)

Each Kindness

We hope you had another great week! We have a lot of fun spirit days coming up for Unity Day, where we unite against bullying and Red Ribbon Week! On Unity Day, Wednesday, Oct. 21, please wear orange so all of us at Oak Hill can stand united against bullying. Your parents are receiving a letter about Red Ribbon Week, so look out for that so you know what to wear for each of those days.

This week's lesson is for our 3rd- 5th grade students. Please watch the story, Each Kindness. we love this story because it let's us see how bullying can affect not only the victim, but also the person who chose to be mean, or the person who stood by and did nothing. Being a bystander, can make you feel guilty and bad that you didn't step up and help. Watch the story to see how the other kids treated Maya and how the students who knew this was going on reacted.

After listening to the story, answer these questions: How did it make you feel? How do you think Maya felt? What could Chloe have done differently? What could all of the students involved have done differently? What would you do if you were a student in this class and saw what the others were doing and saying to Maya? Who are some adults the students could have gone to get help for Maya?

We are using this quiz as a whole-group during our lessons, but click on the link below and see if you can get all of the answers correct on your own, too. Check to see what you already know, or what you may not know about cyber bullying.

We hope this story made you think of each person's perspective that was involved and reflect on what it means to choose kindness. We know we have so many kind students at Oak Hill and we hope if the time ever comes for you to a take a stand against bullying, you will know just what to do.

Have another great week!

¡Que tengan otra gran semana!

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies

Welcome back for another week of lessons! This week's lesson is for PK-2nd grade, but anyone can enjoy it! Did you know the month of October is Bullying Awareness Month?? Ms. Ahumada and Mrs. Rosales will be stopping in your class Zoom times this month to teach you about what bullying is, what it isn't, and how you can get help for yourself or someone else if either you or them are being bullied! It is important to remember that someone making one or two mean choices towards you doesn't mean they are a bully. Bullying is an ongoing, purposeful abuse of power. You'll see what I mean by that in the Howard B. Wigglebottom story below. He is repeatedly bullied by the Snorton twins. Watch to see how Howard handles it and what he does to finally get help! Don't forget to watch to the end to answer all the questions in the quiz, too!!

Poor Howard! I am sad he had to go through all of that for so long. What could he have done to get help sooner? Never be afraid to immediately get help from an adult that you trust. If one adult doesn't get you the help you need, go to another adult. Don't stop until you get the help you need. Also remember to be an upstander, not a bystander. If you see someone else getting bullied, take a stand and help them to get the help they need. Never join in on the bullying or laugh at what they are doing. Stand up for the person being bullied, and encourage others to do so, too!

¡Pobre Howard!

Please click the video below and sing-along to a fun song about bullying!

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 21, which is Unity Day. We will all unite against bullying and wear orange that day to show our support! Have a great week! :-)

My Mouth is a Volcano

We hope you had another great week! For those of you who are coming back to school this week for in-person learning, welcome back! This week's lesson is for 3rd-5th grade and focuses on being an active listener and doing your best to not interrupt. Please listen to the story below to see how Louis has a hard time with interrupting and what he does to work on this and be a better listener. You may find that since we are doing a lot of virtual learning, it is easier and more tempting to interrupt in the Zoom meetings. This lesson is a good reminder of how it is so important to be the best listener you can be, so you don't miss out on any learning, are being polite, are showing your friends, family, and teachers that you care about what they are saying, and sometimes also to help keep you safe (for example, crossing the street, looking out for a ball in a sport you play, etc.) Try practicing all those listening skills (eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, and body still) while you listen to the story.

Now that you have listened to the story, click on the links below to answer some questions about what you learned and to check for understanding. We can't wait to read your responses! :-)

We hope you have another great week, whether you are learning remotely, or in-person! We also look forward to announcing our No Place for Hate coalition members this week!! Stay tuned for that exciting news!

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen

Hello Eagles!! We hope you had a fantastic weekend! This week's lesson is for PK-2 and is all about learning to be the best listener you can be. This is an even more important skill to practice while we are doing things virtually because it can be very hard for some of us to focus that way. I know it can be hard for us sometimes, so even as adults, we really must practice those listening skills. In this story Howard has some trouble at first with listening and following directions but watch until the end to see how he solves this problem!

We hope you enjoyed the story! Answer these questions as you think back about it:
  • What were some mistakes Howard was making in the beginning of the story that showed he wasn't the best listener he could be?
  • How did he start to feel about those mistakes?
  • How did he start to make a change and be a better listener?
  • How did he feel at the end of the story?
Take this quiz to see how well you were listening to the story and see if you can answer all the questions right!

Now watch this fun sing-along and please dance and sing the words!

Here are some posters to remind you of how to be a great listener like Howard!

¡Aquí hay algunos carteles!

We hope you have a great week!! Remember to practice your best listening skills as you work with your classes this week! :-)

"A Little Spot Learns Online"

We hope you had another great week and are starting to get the hang of your virtual learning! We thought it would be a great time to listen to a story about how the character, A Little Spot, manages learning online and what expectations there are.

Did that story seem at all familiar to you? Do you follow the same expectations? How is it different for you and how is it the same? For your activity this week, we want you to make a list of at least three things you can do to be a better online learner and share that with a family member. Also, consider making a visual schedule for your week, so you are organized and can feel accomplished as you check each task off your list! It can be very helpful in making you feel prepared, organized, and accomplished. Here is a sample schedule below.

We hope you all have a wonderful week and we look forward to continuing to see all of you in our Minute Meetings! :-)

For those of you who are new, we are your school counselors. Ms. Ahumada is the full-time counselor and works every day of the week, while Mrs. Rosales is part-time and works Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every other Friday.

We also want you to know that starting this week, we will begin popping into Zoom during one of your class times and we will be pulling each of you into a "breakout room" with us for a very quick minute meeting just to say hi and see how you are doing. We look forward to meeting with you! We have created a lesson for you below to watch that will help you learn even more about us, what we do as counselors, and how you can get a hold of us when you have a big problem. We will have a new lesson for you every other week. This week's lesson is for everyone, but then we will start our regular schedule. Next week will be a lesson for PK-2 and the following week will be for 3rd-5th and it will alternate like that. Enjoy this week's lesson and we look forward to meeting with you all soon!! :-)

Calm Your Worries with "A Little Spot of Anxiety" by Diane Alber

Counseling Lessons for the Week of May 25-28

I cannot believe we have made it to the last week of school! What a crazy and unexpected ending to our year! While I am sad that it is ending this way, instead of being together at Oak Hill and getting to hug each other goodbye for the summer, I must say I am also feeling very proud. I am so proud of all students, parents, and staff for getting through the rest of the school year together with positivity and hard work! We all definitely lived up to our final "SEL Trait of the Month", which was PERSEVERANCE!

We don't yet know what the future will bring for going back to school in the fall and that can cause some anxiety for some of us. I know Mrs. Rosales and I are feeling a bit anxious for sure! It can be hard to face the unknown, but I know that whatever the decision is we will all get through it together as an amazing campus! We wanted to leave you with a lesson and story to help you deal with some of the anxieties you may face at this time. Enjoy this story for all ages about a strategy you can use to calm your anxiety and find your "peaceful spot".

PK- 5th Grade can enjoy this story:

Hopefully you were able to join along with the story and practice moving  or blowing away those "anxiety spots" and turning them into your "peaceful spot". These are just a couple ways you can try to calm your anxiety, but there are so many other ways. What ways have you already tried that have worked for you? For me sometimes exercising works well for me. It gets my endorphins going and makes me forget for a little bit about what I worried about. Especially when my workout involves being outside and getting some fresh air. If I am inside, sometimes it helps to cuddle with my cats or watch something funny with my fiance. Find what works for you and helps you to focus on something more positive. Can you make a list of all the things you can do to calm down, if you are anxious, scared, nervous, or worried?

Here are a couple of activities you can do to help remember to practice your breathing, in addition to the breathing activities you saw in the story:

Try those activities and the different methods Conscious Discipline suggests for calming down. Hopefully you will find the right one that works for you!

Also, if you didn't have a chance to watch the "NPFH Year in Review" video yet, please be sure to check it out! You may even see yourself in it somewhere. It features our big "SEL Day" we had where we went out to the field and spelled "Be Kind". That was such a fun day and I am glad we have that memory to hold on to right before we were unable to come back to school.

Mrs. Rosales and I hope you have a wonderful summer break!! While your summer may look a little different this year, we know you will all get creative and find some fun things to do whether you are in your homes, or outside exploring! Remember to be positive, be kind, and persevere! We look forward to seeing you all in one way or another in the fall!! :-)

Conflict Resolution with Shubert's Big Voice

Counseling Lessons for the week of May 18-22

I hope you all have had a great week!! What fun things did you do this week with your families? Have you been able to turn the "yucky stuff" into a beautiful pearl, like the oyster did in The Story of the Oyster and the Butterfly? Think of all the negative things you've been able to turn into positives. Maybe even write, or draw about them. Doesn't that feel great?

This week we want to share a lesson with you on conflict resolution. We know many of you may have siblings at home and maybe you are getting in some arguments, especially now that we are together all the time. I know I sure had my fair share of arguments with my siblings when I was growing up. It's normal and okay to get in arguments with our siblings and friends sometimes (not too frequently), but what is really important is that we know how to handle those arguments the right way. It is never okay to hit someone and it is not a good idea to scream and yell. Shubert is going to show us how he learned to handle a student in his class who was being mean to him and stole his apple from him. He learned how to use his big voice (firm voice, but not yelling), and you can, too!

All grade levels can enjoy watching Shubert's Big Voice. Then, look for the lesson to complete after the story for your grade level:

Now that you have heard the story, see if you can answer all of these questions. Maybe even try to role play using your "big voice". When someone is bothering you, or doing something they shouldn't be doing to you, it is okay for you to stand up for yourself and tell them to stop. If they don't stop after you have used your "big voice" and you have tried to solve the problem, find a trusted adult to get help from right away.

PK-2 Grade Lesson:

3rd-5th Grade Lesson:

For 3rd-5th grades, you will find these videos about our brains helpful before you do your activity. Your activity relates Shubert's Big Voice to how we react to conflict or situations based on the emotional reactions from different parts of our brains. These videos will help you to learn about the different parts of the brain and how the limbic system is connected to our emotions.

I really love that brain song and hope you did, too! It had me dancing and learning in a fun way! I hope you all have a wonderful week! I can't believe how close we are to the end of the school year. I hope can start thinking of all the fun things you can do this summer. Even though we may be limited to some things we can or can't do, I know you all will get creative and think of some new ideas you maybe haven't thought of before! :-)

Mindfulness with Mind Yeti and Mandalas

Counseling Lessons for the Week of May 4-8

I can't believe that May has already arrived and we are heading into our 7th week of online learning! I just couldn't resist adding this ever-so-popular Justin Timberlake introduction to May. ;-)

It's Gonna Be May Memes For 2020 - StayHipp

This week we want to focus on helping you with ways to practice mindfulness, or being present in the moment. It's easy to sometimes get wrapped up in your electronics, the stress of schoolwork, being worried about things, etc. Learning how to be more mindful can help you detach from all of that and truly clear your head, while just living in the moment.

This week's lesson is to practice being more mindful and one great way to get started with that is by using the Mind Yeti videos. They will help walk you through different mindful activities and meditations. They are appropriate for all ages. Here's one to get you started on your mindful journey:

Here is the link to follow to get the whole Mind Yeti playlist, so you can practice one, or more each day!

Mind Yeti Playlist in English

Another great way to practice mindfulness, or use it for a nice calming activity, is to color mandalas! Here are some examples of mandalas:

Free Printable Mandalas for Kids | Abstract coloring pages ... Mandalas to color for kids - Mandalas Kids Coloring Pages

This website has a lot of free printable mandalas, and even an option to color them online if you don't want to or can't print them out:

We hope you enjoy practicing mindfulness with these tools this week! Make sure when you play the videos are are coloring your mandalas, you are in a quiet area, away from all distractions. Have a great week!! :-)

The Story of the Oyster and the Butterfly

Counseling Lessons for the week of April 27- May 1

I hope you all have had a good week and can't believe we are already heading into May! This week's lesson focuses on what we can do with all the many feelings we may be experiencing during this difficult time; both kids and adults! It's okay to have all the feelings you may be having, whether they are uncomfortable or "good" feelings. It's important to address them, so they are handled in the most healthy ways possible. The Story of the Oyster and the Butterfly: The Corona Virus and Me, will help you to identify ways to do this.

This lesson is for all students, PK-5, so enjoy reading it and make sure you do the activities that are within the story! I think you will find them helpful in expressing those feelings. :-)

Parents, this part is for you! Don't forget that you also need to practice self-care and be good to yourself. During this difficult time, it's important to remember that you are doing your best and that is more than okay! You are doing a great job!! Enjoy this fun little video for a reminder to take "a moment for yourself".

Online Responsibility

Counseling lessons for the week of April 20-24

Our Social and Emotional Word of the Month for April is "Responsibility". There are so many ways to practice good responsibility while you are at home. You can be responsible for cleaning up your own messes, for knowing when you have a Zoom class meeting, knowing when you're assignments are due and getting them done on time, taking care of your pets, helping your parents around the house, and so many more ways. One important type of responsibility we want to talk to you about this week is being responsible while using electronic devices and being on the internet. Check these lessons out to help you with this.

How to Teach our Kids about Coronavirus

Counseling lessons for the week of April 13-17:

Hello Oak Hill families! We hope you have survived your first week of online learning! Just remember to take lots of deep breaths and take things one day at a time. We will all get through this together! For this week's guidance lessons, we wanted to focus on teaching your children about coronavirus in a kid-friendly way. You may have already had discussions with them about this, but here are some more tools to help you have those sometimes-tough conversations.

PK-2:

Washing hands is so important during this time! Here's a fun little song to help your children learn how to wash their hands and for how long. Singing a song while washing hands is very helpful in making sure children are washing long enough.

Here are some coloring sheets to remind you to wash those hands and cover your coughs, after you watch the videos!

And PLEASE don't forget to wash those hands! Sing "Happy Birthday" twice while washing your hands to make sure they are really getting clean.

We hope you have a great week! :-)
